It is estimated that about 75 percent of processed foods sold in the U.S. contain at least some genetically modified food ingredients. Unlike many other countries, there is no law in the U.S. requiring the labeling of foods that contain GM ingredients. But if you know how to identify which foods are most commonly genetically modified, you can reduce how many GMOs you eat. The best way to avoid GMO products is by buying unprocessed 100% certified organic local whole foods.

Here are some ways to avoid genetically modified foods:

Read the PLU labels. If the five digit PLU number starts with “8,” the food is either genetically modified or genetically engineered. If the five digit PLU number starts with “9,” it’s organic. Also, by watching for the absence of either the 8 or 9, which means the produce is neither organically grown or genetically modified, you can recognize traditionally grown produce. Ensure your produce is not genetically modified by reading the number on the sticker, and by buying 100% certified organic.100% certified organic food is by law never genetically modified!

A 4-digit number indicates the food was conventionally grown and may or may not be genetically modified.

A 5-digit number beginning with an 8 is a genetically modified food. However, not all GM foods can be identified because PLU labeling is optional.

A 5-digit number beginning with a 9 indicates it is organic, and thus a non-GM food.

Shop at natural food stores. Shopping at a natural or organic food store does not eliminate the possibility of purchasing genetically modified food, although it does increase the possibility of having a wider variety of non-genetically modified fruits and vegetables.

Purchase a share of a Community Support Agriculture (CSA). Basically, a CSA share is purchasing a portion of a farmer’s harvest. The farmer provides you with a basket full of fruits and vegetables every week. Sometimes, a CSA can also offer raw milk and fresh eggs. Some farmers refuse to grow genetically modified fruit and vegetables. Be sure to ask your farmer before you purchase the share!

Buy direct from the farmer. You can ask the farmer at your local farmer’s market if they grow non-GMO produce. If they don’t know, don’t buy. Be aware that most seeds and plants out there today are genetically modified or engineered. Again, by buying100% certified organic we can avoid genetically modifed foods as much as possible.

Grow your own produce. Look in the seed catalog or on the package for the “Non-GMO” label. If there is no label, you can assume that the seed or plant is genetically modified.

Here is a list of heirloom seed companies and an amazing source of 100% certified organic, non-GMO, nonhybrid seeds.

Urban Gardening: How to Build a Raised bed and Hoop House (video)

Start saving a nonhybrid, heirloom seed bank of 100% certified organic seeds!

Buy foods labeled “100% certified organic.” Laws in both the U.S. and Canada do not allow food labels that say “100% certified organic” to contain any genetically engineered food, including animals that have been fed genetically modified feed. Be aware, however, that if the food is simply labeled “organic” it can still contain genetically modified ingredients up to 30%.

Look for the labels “non-GM” or “GMO-free.” These can be hard to find, but if you are able to support manufacturers that produce foods that are not genetically engineered you encourage other manufacturers to follow their lead.

Buy whole, fresh foods rather than processed ones. Foods that you cook and prepare yourself are almost always healthier than anything you can buy ready-made. Cooking healthy food doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming.There are many simple but delicious and healthy meals that you can prepare in less than 30 minutes that do not involve any genetically modified food.

Know which foods and the products that are made from them are most likely to have been the result of genetic engineering. For example:

Corn: The ingredient derived from corn that is hardest to avoid is high fructose corn syrup. A huge percentage of processed foods and baked goods contains it, not to mention soda. Any food with a label saying there is corn of any kind in it should be avoided unless it states it is 100% certified organic. Popcorn is an exception, as there is currently no popcorn on the market that is genetically modified.

Soybeans: Products made from soybeans include soy flour, soy isolates, soy lecithin, soy protein and isoflavones. Be sure that soy based products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame and such have a label stating it is 100% certified organic to be sure it isn’t genetically modified.

Canola or Rapeseed: Made from one of two cultivars of the rapeseed plant, canola oil almost certainly is derived from genetically engineered crops, unless you are located in the EU, where no genetically modified crops of rapeseed are yet grown. You find it used mostly as cooking oil and in margarine. Olive oil is a better choice.

Cottonseed oil: Cottonseed oil is a primary ingredient in shortening, vegetable oil and margarine, none of which are healthy fats, and many of which contain trans fats. It is also used to a great extent in processed foods like potato chips and other fried snack foods.

Dairy: Some farmers inject cows with the genetically engineered hormone rBGH or rBST in order to boost milk production. Cows also may be fed genetically modified food in the form of grain and alfalfa unless the milk specifically states that it is organic. Look for products that advertise themselves as rBGH- or rBST-free.

Sugar beets: There is unfortunately no way of knowing if something labeled as containing “sugar” comes from just sugar cane or if it also includes sugar made from beets, since there is no special labeling required. Beet sugar can be avoided by buying products labeled as being made with evaporated cane sugar, 100% cane sugar or organic sugar.

Avoid aspartame as a sweetener. The sweetener used in many products such as NutraSweet and Equal, Aspartame is derived from genetically modified microorganisms.

Buy 100% organic fruit juices. Though most fruit juices are not derived from GM foods, the sweetener used in many of these juices (and sodas as well) is high fructose corn syrup, which is almost certainly from genetically modified corn.

Buy meat that is 100% grass-fed. Most cattle in the U.S. are grass-fed until the last three to four months of their lives. At this point they are usually shipped to feedlots where they may be given GM corn and other genetically modified foods in order to increase the amount of “marbling” in the meat. Meat from these feedlot animals has higher levels of saturated fat and less of the healthy omega 3 fatty acids than grass-fed and grass-finished animals. To avoid meat that has been fed GMOs, make sure the animal was100% grass-fed or pasture-fed (sometimes also referred to as grass-finished or pasture-finished). For animals such as pigs and poultry that cannot be 100% grass-fed, it’s better to buy meat that is labeled as 100% certified organic if possible.

Buy wild caught fish. Farm raised fish are fed fish meal containing GM grains and sometimes meat and bone meal.

Buy 100% certified organic eggs. Eggs should be labeled 100% certified organic, as those with only a “free-range,” “natural,” or “cage-free” label are not necessarily free of GMOs.

Buy your meat and produce at local farmers’ markets. Most genetically modified food is grown on large industrial farms. The farmers’ market allows you to talk directly with the farmer to find out how the food was grown. These markets also usually provide a range of other products, such as organic honey, grains, baked goods, etc. Another place to find healthy, non-GMO products is your neighborhood co-op.

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in the U.S. ,affecting more than 10 million Americans. This isn’t just an American problem; it’s happening all over the world at an ever-increasing rate. If you are over the age of 55, your chance of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is about 1 in 10. Those aren’t good odds. Fortunately, new research is showing that AMD may be preventable.

Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina. The retina is the inside back layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them by way of the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. The retina’s central portion, known as the macula, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail. As people age, their chances of developing AMD increase dramatically.

The major reason for blindness in the United States 30 years ago was diabetes, and it was rare to find macular degeneration. Today the condition has overtaken diabetes fivefold and is now the leading cause of loss of vision in the United States as well as most other industrialized countries. Two-thirds of those who lose their vision are blind due to macular degeneration.

“I’ve seen an exponential rise from the early 1970s through to the 1990s,” says Dr. Paul Beaumont, an ophthalmologist with the Macular Degeneration Foundation. “If we look at Japan 40 years ago the disease was rare; now it’s common.”

“I don’t think there’s any doubt we have an epidemic.” Dr. Beaumont is horrified at the rate macular degeneration has multiplied. He’s seen a tenfold increase in the last 30 years.

Although the disease progresses slowly, macular degeneration can affect eyesight very quickly. “One day I was doing crosswords and the next day I couldn’t.” says Jillian Price. For Jillian, the disease has disabled her life as an active woman. “Two months is very fast to lose so much sight; I’ve lost a lot of my independence,” Ms. Price said. “The distance, everything is distorted, getting on the buses, shopping is very hard, I can’t read labels any more.”

For years researchers have sought for the cause and a cure. New research suggests that coconut oil may help prevent this condition. Studies are now showing that if your diet includes soybean, corn, and other processed vegetable oils, you may be at high risk for developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Over the past few years several studies have linked polyunsaturated vegetable oils with macular degeneration. The research shows that people who eat polyunsaturated vegetable oils get the disease twice as commonly as those who don’t. Even more convincing was a recent study where those eating a lot of vegetable oil progressed toward macular degeneration at 3.8 times the rate of those eating a little vegetable oil. Saturated fat has the lowest risk, and the higher the degree of saturation the better.

The macula sits at the back of the eye. The oils that you eat become part of your eye. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils are very susceptible to lipid peroxidation. Peroxidation is a chemical process that causes fats to become rancid. These rancid oils end up interfering with normal cell function, leading to macular degeneration.

When oils become rancid, they create destructive free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that literally rip other molecules apart, causing irreversible damage to cells. Our only means of self-defense against free radicals are antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent lipid peroxidation and the formation of free radicals. Our bodies make antioxidants from the nutrients in our diet. The most common antioxidant nutrients are vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, and the mineral zinc. Lutein, another antioxidant nutrient, has been shown to be effective in slowing the progression of AMD. For this reason, a vitamin regimen high in antioxidant nutrients and especially lutein has been recommended as a possible means to treat macular degeneration.

Saturated fats are very resistant to peroxidation. A high concentration of saturated fat in eye tissue can protect against lipid peroxidation associated with AMD. Coconut oil is higher in saturated fat than any other dietary fat. For this reason, it is very stable and highly resistant to peroxidation. It is so stable that it acts as a protective antioxidant and helps protect against the formation of free radicals.

The oils you need to watch out for are the types people normally use every day—soybean, safflower, corn and other polyunsaturated oils, including margarine and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Even canola oil, a monounsaturated fat, isn’t safe. Olive oil is better because it has a higher percentage of saturated fat.

It’s not just the oils you use in cooking or salads. Packaged convenience foods and junk foods are loaded with hidden polyunsaturated oils. Look at the ingredients in any sauce, dip, bread, cracker, cake mix, or frozen dinner. Vegetable oil is hidden in all of them. Most of us have been consuming these processed foods from the time we could walk.

“I think we could halve the number of people going blind with macular degeneration if we could change their diet, cut out the vegetable oil,” Dr. Beaumont says.

Gwen Oliver was diagnosed with macular degeneration two years ago. She was astonished when Dr Beaumont told her to steer clear of vegetable oils. “I was surprised about diet and all the products that we’ve been eating in the past,” Oliver said. “We’ve always had it advertised that vegetable oil was far better for us.”

Dr. Beaumont says he doesn’t envision vegetable oil being removed from all foods, but says there should be a consumer health warning. “I think we have to have a warning on the packages similar to a warning of a cigarette package: vegetable oil can lead to macular degeneration.”

With the latest research pointing to vegetable oils as the main culprit, it may be possible to fend off this disease by simply changing our diets. The first step you should take to defend yourself from age-related macular degeneration is to eliminate most polyunsaturated oils from your diet, including foods made with these oils. Read ingredient labels. The second step is to use coconut oil and other healthy saturated fats for most of your food preparation. The third step is to make sure you get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidant nutrients into your diet. The general recommendation is at least five servings per day. Some doctors are recommending 8 to 9 servings a day. I do too.

Dr. Beaumont has lobbied the federal government to help fund awareness of this huge problem. “I think they should move fairly urgently,” he said. “I don’t think we can afford to delay in informing the public about something which can be affecting their vision.” To date, however, nothing has happened. You, fortunately, don’t need to wait for the government to step in and do something. That may take a long time. You can do something right now by carefully selecting the foods you eat.■

Illness begins at the level of the spirit. Disharmony or dis-ease of the body is often the result of disharmony or disease in the spirit. When we address the spirit, when we work to heal our emotional well-being, we often experience fewer physical manifestations of dis-ease and illness!

EMOTIONS -

Many things effect our emotions: pregnancy , childbirth, diet, lack of exercise, illness death or stress. The emotions around memories of powerful events in our lives are particularly potent in unsettling our peace of mind Unfortunately when this onslaught of emotions attacks we often seek medical attention in hopes of easing our distress. Unfortunately, this is often a temporary fix, the treating of symptoms instead of treating the actual cause of distress. Sometimes the temporary fix can lead to even more challenges than before.

BREAKING EMOTIONAL ADDICTION -

Emotions are an addiction. Every time you revisit the emotional drama of a memory you reinforce that emotion, make that emotion even stronger. How can you neutralize negative emotions? Try this – to help break negative emotions, bring up a memory. Stop and think about how the emotions around that memory make you feel. Does the emotion, the feeling own you? Does it control you? Ask yourself, does this emotion have the right to own and control you? No? Then let it go! As you release the emotion, letting it go, affirm that the emotion does not own or control you. As you make this affirmation, apply an essential oil as suggested below. In time you will notice the grip of the emotion easing, until ultimately, it will no longer have a hold on you. Although the memory will remain, the emotional drama no longer controls you. Although the memory remains, there is no longer any emotional drama attached.

EMOTIONS AND ESSENTIAL OILS -

The beauty of essential oils is that they work with the body’s chemistry to help restore the balance of the mind, body, and spirit.

Essential Oils are drawn from the vital energies of nature’s many plants, making each oil or blend very diverse in its effects. Essential oils work in many different ways. The benefit of an oil depends on its chemical properties. Some individual oils can have 200 or more different properties. These different properties are why Lavender, for example, can be used for stress, burns, rashes, bug bites and so much more.

Young Living, which produces only oils of the purest and highest therapeutic grade, offers several blends created to take the guess work out of using oils to enhance emotional healing and harmony. These oils may be used topically, by diffusing, or inhaling. An experienced practitioner who is knowledgeable about the use of therapeutic-grade essential oil will understand the ideal oil blend, delivery method and body placement to address specific imbalances for each individual.

Here are some Essential Oil blends such a practitioner might recommend:

Valor- This blend balances and empowers, giving you the feeling of being grounded. Use on the soles of the feet, back of neck, and across the forehead.

Harmony – This is a wonderful oil to use to help you move forward, to help forgive and forget. Harmony may help with emotions created by blocked anger. When there is disharmony in the body the chakras may not be properly balanced. Placing Harmony on the chakras, or the soles of your feet, and over your heart may help.

Present Time - Too many people live in the past, allowing the past to dictate the future. Dragging your past with you influences all that you say and do in the present. Be conscious of your words, get out of your rut. Live in the present. Lightly rub 2 drops of Present Time clockwise on your chest. This will help anchor you in present time

Release - This blend moves you beyond where you are stuck. Use a couple of drops over the liver and your heart. This may also help with being stuck in fear.

Inner Child – Women, more than men, easily lose their identity while balancing children, marriage and a job. Inner Child helps you with your identity; anchors who you are. Apply 1 drop to the middle of your forehead and base of neck.

Please remember this is for educational purposes only. In no way is this intended to treat, diagnose or prescribe. Do not discontinue any medications without speaking with your practitioner. Your are in charge of your health, do your research and chose wisely.

Have you ever wondered why it is called ‘men’opause? Last time I checked, “men” were not the key factor. Men seldom get concerned about our hormones until the spillover is unavoidable! Interestingly enough, at some point in our lives, men have given all of us sleepless nights, emotional turmoil and irritability, headaches, digestive problems, hair loss or at least pulling our hair out in frustration. These similarities may be the ironic aspect of menopause. But all joking aside, menopause is a serious matter that not only makes life miserable, but has significant health implications for every woman.

Between the ages of 45 and 55, most women will enter perimenopause, which is a term that describes the “menopause transition years”. Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her ovaries stop producing eggs, her body produces less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, and menstruation becomes less frequent, eventually stopping altogether. The symptoms of menopause are caused by changes in estrogen andprogesterone levels as the ovaries produce less and less of these hormones over time. The specific symptoms vary from woman to woman and range from mild to severe.

According to 2000 U.S. Census data, 37.5 million women are currently reaching menopause age (40 to 59) and up to 70% of these women may experience varying symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections (UTI), memory problems, fatigue and irritability. Hot flashes and sweats are at their worst for the first 1 – 2 years following the last period, but menopause symptoms may last 5 years or more. Other potential symptoms associated with menopause include difficulty sleeping, skin flushing, mood swings and depression, decreased libido, headaches, achy and painful joints or even heart palpitations.

When the production of estrogen and progesterone slows, it affects the whole endocrine system including your thyroid, hypothalamus, pituitary, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal body, and reproductive glands. The pancreas is also part of this hormone-secreting system. Everything works together. Consequently, any imbalance of the endocrine system causes other effects, which explains the variation from woman to woman in the types of symptoms as well as their severity.

What factors besides age create this imbalance? Diet is one very important factor. Meat and dairy products often contain added steroids and artificial hormones, including growth hormones; all these chemicals can wreak havoc on our bodies. When the production of progesterone slows down, our bodies become estrogen dominant. Eating unclean meats and dairy intensifies this condition and intensifies the symptoms of menopause. In addition, exposure to synthetic hormones dramatically increases your chance of ovarian and breast cancer.

The first step in managing this change is to clean up the diet by reading labels carefully. Purchase meat and dairy products that are free of steroids, antibiotics and hormones. Meat doesn’t have to be organic to be healthy. Farmers pay a high price for an organic “certification” and many local farmers who have practiced organic methods for years can’t afford to pay this price. It is also very important to avoid all processed, synthetic foods and vitamins. This includes anything produced with genetically modified organisms (GMO). In fact, living this way even prior to menopause is very likely to reduce the challenges of going through this life transition in addition to enhancing your overall health.

The second step is to work with an experienced practitioner who is knowledgeable about the use of therapeutic-grade essential oils. Mother Nature has provided a bountiful pharmacy and certain essential oils have hormone-like properties which may help support the endocrine system. Using these oils instead of synthetic hormones offers a safer, natural alternative without harmful side effects. In fact, medical research shows that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can actually increase the risk of breast cancer.

A trained professional will understand the ideal oil blend, delivery method and body placement to address specific imbalances for each individual.

For example, for hot flashes, bergamot, clary sage, nutmeg, sage, ylang ylang, fennel, and peppermint may be beneficial You may try applying one of the above oils behind the ankles, low back or over the uterus. It may also be helpful to diffuse them or to simply inhale.

Another tremendous product is a therapeutic grade blend created by Dr. Dan Purser, who specializes in natural hormone therapy. Progessence Plus Serum is the first product of this kind on the market in the United States. It is made from wild yam, vitamin E and a blend of therapeutic grade essentials oils. Studies indicate that limonene (from frankincense and bergamot) as well as menthol from peppermint oil can enhance the absorption of natural progesterone through the skin. Most natural hormones or bio-identical hormones can be costly but Progessence Plus is very user friendly and easy on your wallet.

Lately I have had a lot of questions about being tired, overwhelmed and just not having any get-up-and-go, especially now that we have passed all the year-end holidays and celebrations.

Is this depression, are we sick? What is wrong with us?

We’ve just had a big rush, starting with Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping. On top of that, we added holiday programs at school, holiday parties for our family, friends and children, and then even more shopping. Holy Smokes, what else can we cram into our day? Wait! We still have our jobs, responsibilities at home whatever else we manage to squeeze in to our 24 hour day.

When the dust clears, the kids are back in school, and everything goes back to a normal routine we are left feeling like we’ve been hit by a bus! Why do we feel that way?

Adrenal Fatigue

Some studies call this feeling adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue is caused when we keep pushing ourselves until there is no more push left. We reach a point where the adrenal glands can no longer meet the demands of our stress level. When this happens our adrenal glands have challenges regulating hormones properly.

What are adrenals?

Put simply, they are the glands responsible for releasing hormones related to stress such as cortisol and epinephrine. Adrenals also effect kidney function by releasing a hormone called aldosterone which regulatesplasma osmolarity. Different parts of the adrenals have specific jobs that effect the thyroid, blood pressure, testosterone, DHEA and our flight or fight response.

How can you tell if your adrenals are fatigued?

You may be experiencing adrenal fatigue if you regularly notice one or more of the following:

you feel tired for no reason,

you have trouble getting up in the morning, even when you go to bed at a reasonable hour,

you are feeling rundown or overwhelmed,

you have difficulty bouncing back from stress or illness,

you crave salty and sweet snacks,

you feel more awake, alert and energetic after 6PM than you do all day.

In addition, certain health challenges may be related to adrenal fatigue, such as autoimmune disorders, chronic infections, PMS and menopause, allergies and sleep disorders, to name a few.

What can we do to reverse our adrenal challenge?

Stimulants - Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, sugar, energy drinks . These items are temporary fixes and will challenge the adrenals even more.

Nutrition - What you put in your body effects the outcome. Put junk in and you’ll get poor results. Put good whole food nutrition and you’ll feel great and have more energy. Eat what is in season, support your body with clean protein, good fats such as coconut oil* and clean fruits, veggies and high fiber carbs. High fiber has shown to stabilize blood sugar and possibly posing less stress on the adrenals.

Relax - Mediate, yoga, listen to music, whatever makes you happy. Take time out for you, even if it is only 30 minutes a day.

Hydrate the body - It is always important to hydrate with clean water, not from plastic containers. Use stainless steel when possible. (that is another article) Coconut water is another way to hydrate and is a good source for electrolytes.*

Essentials Oils - Therapeutic grade essential oils may be beneficial in getting your groove back.

Two essential oil blends that may prove helpful are:

Nutmeg Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil - comforting and soothing, nutmeg may boost energy. Studies have shown it may support nervous and endocrine systems and prostaglandin balance.* May also help if you are sleep challenged.*

Endoflex Blend - This blend may help you maintain overall vitality with a proprietary blend of essential oils that support the endocrine system.*

Suggested use -

With my clients I suggest the application of the Endoflex midway down on the back, about 5-10 drops in the morning and as needed during the day.Endoflex may also be beneficial if applied before bed. Apply a couple of drops to the chest area clockwise and thump the chest. In natural therapies this is suggested because of it may stimulate the thymus.

For possible added support you may try inhaling nutmeg oil and or spearmint oil, and applying a couple of drops to the bottoms of your feet several times a day.

I know when I have a challenging day I keep these oils with-in reach to support my body in times of added stress.

This is a process, remember to give your body the time it needs to heal its self.
